Midtown & Mayfair is a handmade lavender weighted lap quilt with a rail fence cover pieced in deep burgundy, soft sage, and slate green. Twenty-four striped blocks alternate between horizontal and vertical, and white floral sashing frames each one. A scrappy pieced binding in the same colors finishes the edges.
The name comes from what’s inside. A removable insert, filled with flax seed and lavender buds for gentle weight and a soothing aroma, is covered in a whimsical New York and London print — yellow taxis, Fifth Avenue, Tower Bridge, and Baker Street — and slips in through a button-closure opening in the backing, with cotton corner ties keeping it from shifting. Remove the insert to spot clean, or wash the cover on its own.
The rich jewel tones suit a farmhouse sofa, a reading chair, or a guest bed. It makes a memorable gift for anyone who loves travel or has a heart in both cities. Each quilt is one of a kind.
